SB Connect Winter 2016

£400,000 for light work

Scottish Borders Council is investing £400,000 over two years to provide permanent safe connections for festive lighting and support communities with their arrangements.

The proposals follow a review of festive lighting in the Borders which uncovered various unsafe connections and lighting arrangements in many towns. The review also highlighted the need for the Council to have a long-term service delivery model and specific budget in place to ensure festive lighting equipment and infrastructure can be replaced when needed.

Rob Dickson, the Council’s Director of Environment and Infrastructure, explained: “The safety of the public and our staff will always be our priority. That is why we have decided that we need to make a substantial investment to ensure we can continue to support communities with their festive lighting arrangements while, at the same time, making sure they comply with all the necessary safety legislation.”

A series of meetings is under way with community groups to discuss how the Council can support their festive lighting arrangements.
