SB Connect Winter 2016

Tour back in Borders

The Tour of Britain, one of the professional bicycle races, is returning to Peebles on Sunday 11 September for the start of the race.

The Tour of Britain has been visiting Scotland since 2005. The eight-day event, held annually, is a centrepiece of the UK sporting calendar. Every year, some of the world’s top cyclists including Olympic, World and Commonwealth Champions, compete for the right to wear the leader’s jersey.

The event was last in the Borders in 2009, when Peebles hosted Stage Three. The 2011 event will see professional cyclists ride through Innerleithen, Traquair, Yarrow Valley, Talla, Tweedsmuir, Moffat and finishing in Dumfries. It will provide a stunning route for the Scottish stage of the Tour and will showcase what the Borders can offer as a road cycling and event destination.

Cycling enthusiasts have the opportunity to take on the challenge of the Tour of Britain route with the prostate cancer charity tour ride on 4 September.

Riders can take the same 170km stage from Peebles to Dumfries that the professional riders follow.

A GREAT way of warming up for the charity tour ride would be to enter Hawick Cycling Club’s famous Ken Laidlaw Sportive on 21 August 2011. It offers three routes of 36, 83 and 169km. The longer route takes in 10 big climbs totalling 2400 metres.

The Tour of Tweeddale Sportive is on 3 September 2011, the day before the charity tour ride begins.

Tweeddale has spectacular and challenging road cycling on mainly quiet roads. This Sportive, organised by Peebles Cycling Club, offers a choice of three courses – 80, 112 and 144km.

These routes take in some stunning views as they wind their way through wooded valleys and some of the high open passes looking over the Megget and Talla Reservoirs and St Mary’s Loch.
