SB Connect Winter 2016

Driving forward

Staff from the Council’s Roads and Fleet department recently attended a ceremony to celebrate their success in achieving a range of Scottish and National Vocational Qualifications (SVQs and NVQs) and health and safety certificates.

Twenty-one manual workers, six technical staff and 12 management staff were successful across a number of levels and qualifications:

  • 19 staff achieved S/NVQ Level 2 in Highways Maintenance
  • two staff achieved S/NVQ Level 2 in Roadbuilding
  • five staff achieved S/NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting
  • one person achieved S/NVQ Level 3 in Signmaking
  • 12 staff achieved their Safety Representatives Certificate, awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Staff were congratulated at the ceremony on their achievements, which ensure they are knowledgeable and skilled members of the workforce. This, in turn, ensures the Council is able to maintain compliance with the law and current regulations and ensure that the Borders roads network is developed and maintained safely and to a high standard.

The Council was one of the first employers to train its Highways Maintenance Supervisors to Level 3 SVQ standard and, since then, has used competence-based qualifications at all levels to train and develop its personnel from road worker to construction manager.
